Miraa is scientifically known as Catha edulis. It is native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It is a plant whose fresh leaves and soft twigs are chewed to release a juice containing cathinone and cathine the active chemicals that alter the mood of the abuser. (NACADA) In Kenya, miraa is known by a number of street names such as Muguka, Halwa, Giza, Mairungi, Mbachu, Veve, Gomba, Khat, and Goks.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse heroin is an opioid drug synthesized from morphine a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian opium poppy plant. Heroin usually appears as a white or brown powder or as a black sticky substance known as black tar heroin.

Kuber is smokeless tobacco that is highly addictive being sold under the brand name Kuber disguised as a mouth freshener and packed in small sachets that resemble tea leaves sachets. Because of this even small children are able to access it from the shops. It is undetectable because it has no smell. It contains four times more nicotine compared to ordinary cigarettes.

Ecstasy also known as MDMA or molly is a psychoactive synthetic drug that has similarities to both the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. It works by producing feelings of increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth and empathy towards others and distortion in sensory and time perception.

Cocaine is a highly addictive drug stimulant drug made from leaves of coca plant that is native to South America. It was originally developed as a pain killer.  According to the Foundation for a Drug Free World once a person begins taking cocaine it has proved almost impossible to become free of its grip both physically and mentally.
